Signs of CS

My friend, the Gentle Author, did a book “The Cries of London”, which featured vintage depictions of street vendors.     We don’t have enough pedestrian traffic here to have street sellers, but we do have plenty of people who stand around on street corners twirling signs at the passing traffic.   So I guess that the “cries” here are mostly silent, but here are a few of the people that I see when I am driving around.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Of course our state is famous for legalizing marijuana.   But, there are some restrictions.   In Pueblo and Manitou Springs you can just walk into any pot shop and buy as much weed as you like (or can afford), as it is a cash only business.   To buy it here in town, you need to have a medical marijuana card from a doctor that says you need it for a medical condition (and plenty of cash).   I would think that this product would sell itself, but this guy was out standing on the street corner to draw business to this shop.   From the great number of these pot shops you might think that we have an enormous number of sick people living here.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Right down the street from that guy I spotted this young lady.   I yelled “Hey Penguin” and she turned so I could take her picture.   She was advertising a vacancy at an apartment complex.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This place is quite near my house, so I often see these guys out.   Whenever business is slow, they make the employees get out to drum up business, in the best tradition of street sellers.  Some days this spot is given over to the barber shop flogging cheap haircuts, and on Valentines Day I saw someone from the shop that sells naughty knickers.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This pirate was advertising for a chiropractor.    Perhaps the treatment included keelhauling or plank walking as well.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

These people can be seen all over town at this time of year.   No they are not dressed as the statue of liberty to tax your freedom, they are trying to get you to use their service for having your taxes prepared.   This guy was done with his shift of sign waving and was headed to the office to collect his money.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This distant shot shows one of the many beggars that are out soliciting money.   For this task one needs a hand lettered cardboard sign.  Even if they are out there in the same spot every day, there are no professional looking signs.   Popular slogans are:  anything helps, God bless, homeless veteran, travelling through, etc.

Santos

There was a recent free day at the local art museum, so I trotted on down there.   (St. Louis has a wonderful art museum and it’s free, so I am against paying to see art, but that’s just me.)   This museum has a focus on Native American and Hispanic art, but also shows  whatever else they can find to flog as art.    Their collection includes an entire family chapel that they moved from northern New Mexico, which is currently not on display, but they were having an exhibition of Santos (Saints) that included both ancient and new works in the traditional style.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This one is modern, it seems to be skillfully made and has a nice composition

KODAK Digital Still Camera

A very traditional grouping that is probably a copy of an earlier work.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Old and new.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Very traditional.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

It’s kind of unfortunate that some churches sold off their art, they no doubt replaced it with something more of the moment.   These original pieces were made with love and devotion and show the influence of the maker’s hand.  And they are art as well.

Bunnies

It all started with “Tales of Peter Rabbit”.    Yes the lovely story of the misadventures of this mischievous young rabbit was the start of a love affair with the family Leporidae.   And Easter is their holiday, starting with their chocolate representatives who bring us both hard boiled and candy eggs.   Who wouldn’t like such a splendid species (other than gardeners, farmers,  Australians, Elmer Fudd, etc.)

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Here’s my copy of the story, it’s not actually the one I originally read, I’m sure that was a library book.    Accompanied by my porcelain rabbit that I bought when I worked in a toy store about 30 years ago.   I had a Peter Rabbit, but my last dog decided it was too tempting  a treat to go untasted.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Here’s my newest rabbit, it is a “velveteen rabbit” from the story of the same name.   It is actually some sort of plush, but that is a minor quibbling detail.   Next to it is an Indian rabbit, made out of a Pendleton blanket, I bought this at March Pow-Wow some years ago.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This bunny belonged to M, and he got it when he was a small child and first came to America, so that would make it close to 60 years old.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

These are my new bunny salt and pepper shakers.   It’s not anything I needed, but they were too adorable to resist (note to self:  you must try harder to resist things).

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Here is one of the actual bunnies that lives down by the mailbox.   I took this picture the other day as Miss P barked madly at her.   Today we are having a spring blizzard, so I expect that they are all snug in their rabbit holes, eating blackberries and cream like the siblings of Peter Rabbit.   Poor Peter, he had to go to bed without this treat.

St. Patrick’s Day

Well it started out as a saint’s day, that meant if you went to mass on that day they might mention him.   Or if you went to St. Patrick’s school, like my brothers, you would get the day off.   But because he is the Irish saint, the day has become a secular holiday, with plenty of drinking (just say “no” to green beer) and the eating of the corned beef and cabbage.   And like many other holidays, his day has become movable instead of fixed,  for instance our fair city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade was held on the Saturday before.   But, I was downtown on the real St. Patrick’s Day for the monthly photo event, and these were a few of the photos I shot.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This homeless guy had trained his little dog to ride on his shoulders.   Some kind person was buying them lunch and they were waiting on it. The local soup kitchen is about three blocks away, but there were plenty of street people out working the lunchtime crowds.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The theme for the day was “the photoing o’ the green”, and I loved this bike going by.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

H. Dumpty (not a very Irish name) had on a lovely green outfit, so he fit the theme.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Out enjoying the sunshine before today’s snow, this fellow was sharing an Irish joke with passing folks.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Just a bit of street art, covering up a functional utility box in a pretty way.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

I just liked the reflections when I took this picture, and if you look closely, why there’s a photographer caught in the picture.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

I’m not sure what St. Patrick would think of the kitsch sold in his honor, or what the day has become.   I’m sure he would like to be known for his saintly deeds in converting the heathens, but at least he is remembered.

AirBnB or is it DeerBnB?

Well the neighborhood deer have gotten pretty comfortable with hanging out.   They are part of the herd of God’s cattle, and they mostly go wherever the mood (or food) takes them.   Sometimes I don’t see them for weeks, which makes them the perfect sort of pet (unlike Miss P who is constantly seeing one or another of her vets).

This week I have had a lot of visitors, and they made themselves right at home.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This fellow had lost a fight, he had only one horn, and no harem.   Maybe next year.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This one is a fellow bachelor, they were no doubt relaxing together and talking about sports.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The ladies were standing, but the young buck (I think he’s a buck because he has antler buds) was laying down.   Maybe it’s a guy thing.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Yes, it is definitely a guy thing.   Here’s yet another buck just relaxing on the lawn.   My lawn is the perfect place to survey their domain and keep an eye out for predators, just in case.   And the front window is the perfect place to survey these deer. (And they’re not even bothered by Miss P madly barking at them from inside the house.)

Traces

In cities like London and New York, it is the dream of developers to build towering structures, dedicated to maximizing profits from presumably  fabulously wealth people.   Here, there is plenty of land, but only limited water.   And that influences how the course of land development goes, but not the dream of making money.

It takes a certain kind of dreamer and a person with financial know- how to bring a project to completion (hopefully they know each other).   And it doesn’t always work out the way one plans, like this example.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Yes, that is the sky, visible through the empty window frames of this proposed shopping mall located on the far northern edge of town.  They got as far as building this gigantic space, complete with plenty of parking.   Then they ran out of other people’s money, so it sits half finished and empty, waiting for a need or a reason to complete it.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Located quite near is this unfinished dream, just down the road.   I think it was supposed to be a hotel, or water park, or some sort of destination recreational/shopping place.   They did get further along in construction before it was abandoned, it has windows.    Now it is being finished by another group, perhaps they will succeed in drawing crowds.

Fifty years ago this was the newest and best. And it was opened with a proper amount of hoopla as report in the local paper.

“Speeches were as scarce as the expected snowflakes at the ribbon-cutting ceremonies of the Rustic Hill Plaza Shopping Center on Wednesday.   Binky the Clown and his Binky-Go-Round captured the children’s attention while shoppers were busy receiving gifts of ice cream cones, shower caps, ballpoint pens, Coke, notebooks, stationery and hot pad holders from the plaza shops.”

Now it sits empty, waiting .

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The grocery store, drug store, Chinese restaurant and small shops that once filled it have all disappeared.   Leaving only a shell that is occasionally rented out for gun shows.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

These bench seats sit lonely and abandoned in a parking lot.   This large, beautiful, specially built restaurant was going to be a landmark in the city.   It was quite popular when it opened, but the building cost too much and the owners did not make money.   And various new people came along to try and make a go of it, but didn’t.   The latest attempt led to a new sign, and that is all.   Big dreams, pipe dreams, all that is left are the shells.   Until some new dreamer comes along.

Almost a church

On today’s walk, Miss P and I took some time to explore an enormous Christian ministry that is not a church.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Focus on the Family moved to town in 1993 from California (expensive and full of heathens), joining the numerous Christian organizations that are located here.  Focus has four buildings with 526,070 square feet of space that sit on 47 acres of landscaping and parking lots.   This organization was founded by a psychologist, James Dobson, and he started out with just a radio show.   He ran the organization until 2003, then he was a figurehead, and he has totally left the organization now.

Again, it’s hard to show in pictures just how enormous this campus is.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Not shown is the gigantic dish for broadcasting their daily message.   It’s sort of hidden in the back.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

There is a visitor center for tourists, they even have a sign out on the motorway (this is very unusual for a private organization, much less one with a religious affiliation).   And they have a bookstore with lots of conservative Christian books, dvd’s, etc. etc.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

There are a few bits of art on the grounds.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

But overall, it’s impossible not to be impressed by the gorgeous setting, the amazing views of the mountain.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

At the height of the organization’s influence they had about 1400 employees.   Now they are down to just over 600, which is still an impressive workforce.    And they still generate controversy, but not as much as they used to.

Bears about town

KODAK Digital Still Camera

I’ve ended up going downtown several times recently for a variety of reasons.   And when I was there, I was struck (figuratively, of course) by the beauty of this bear.   They are gorgeous, majestic and somewhat terrifying creatures.

Supposedly there is a real bear that lives in the hills up above my house, but I have only seen traces of him, including wet footprints on the trail.  But you can find images of them around town.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Here’s the bear as patriotic yard art.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This window display shows the two sides of a bear.   The cute and cuddly teddy bear is quite lovable, harmless and friendly.   The Indian has both a bear claw necklace and wears a bearskin around his waist, showing that he is brave and has the spirit of the bear (the fierce bear, not the cuddly bear).

KODAK Digital Still Camera

There is even an eating establishment in town just for bears.   I assume that they serve porridge (not too hot, and not too cold, just right).

KODAK Digital Still Camera

And if you want your car to be fixed by bears it just might happen.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This local bear was both ferocious and festive.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Okay, I’m sure that you can guess why I took this picture.  Yes, of course it was for the bear.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This poor fellow presides over a bar filled with scantily clad waitresses.   But perhaps he is enjoying it after all, he does have a grin.

Traces

Once a month there is a gathering of a few photographers downtown, and we shoot to the theme of the day.   Of course the other photographers all had big fancy cameras, with giant lenses and thick neck straps to show that they are serious about this.   I had my little point and shoot on a wrist strap.   Photography was the original hobby that made you look absent-minded  as you focus on what might make a great shot (now the thing that makes people absent-minded is staring at their phone while attempting to walk down the street).

We were down by the old train station.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

It has never been a passenger train station in the time that I have lived here,  although my friend said she actually took a train from here many long years ago when she was a child.   Then it was a popular restaurant for many years.  We would go there to eat Reuben sandwiches (grilled corned beef, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese) and watch the freight trains  and coal carriers as they passed by.   It’s a lovely building, built to last.  I believe at one time it was a Harvey House, back when passenger travel was possible.  Now it sits empty, and homeless people congregate in the park across the street.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

These were my “artistic” shots.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

They do look different shot in black and white.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

There is a mural nearby that celebrates the past.   This appears to show an old guy being dragged onto the train.   What’s this about?

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The lone figure in front of the train seems rather sinister,  reminiscent of Simon Legree, the stock villain of melodrama.  That beard and mustache is rather suspicious.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

The weight and fate machine was not forgotten in this mural.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

This bit shows tourists perusing a sign, perhaps looking a little lost.   They’re here, now what?   Some things never change.

Adventures with dog

One thing about life with Miss P, there is never a dull moment.   Of course there are aggravating moments,  sad moments, goofy moments, expensive moments, embarrassing moments, etc.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

She does have that adorable face and curly fur, and she gets frequent compliments from total strangers about these.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

She has a lot of appointments to go to; once a week she gets acupuncture and physical therapy for her back legs.   And she goes swimming as well to keep in shape, because a girl has to watch her figure.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

Here she is at a political rally, with our congressman growing out of her head.   She gets around!

KODAK Digital Still Camera

She’s a “lady who lunches”, out and about town.

In her never-ending quest to break the bank, she is a frequent visitor the the veterinarian’s office.    Her most recent visit came about because of two incidents:   She takes a lot of pills, and a spoonful of liver sausage makes the medicine go down (I think that there is a song about this).   I foolishly threw the outer plastic wrapper in the trash.   This is apparently an open invitation to raid the trash can in dog language, so she did.    And then she was up several times in the night needing urgently to go outside, the brat.   The other incident was not really her fault, she stepped in a gopher hole and fell on a cactus!    Curse you, evil gophers.   So I pulled out the more obvious cactus spines, but I couldn’t really see the tiny spines, so it was off to the vet’s office.    They did try not to laugh, but it was a unique and goofy problem.

KODAK Digital Still Camera

I stole this idea for a picture from the internet, but I think it totally fits her personality, half dog and half rampaging monster (not sure if it’s 50/50).   But I love her and she is a special dog, at least to me.
