Update from Miss P

KODAK Digital Still Camera

In my last post I said that I have had a pretty good life, and that is still mostly true.   But I unfortunately have had a touch of back trouble.   Actually, I had to get an Magnetic Resonance Imaging,  (when I first wrote this I just used the initials, but a spam robot likes this, so I had to change it) , which involved a big scary machine and taking some funny medicine that made me quite goofy.   I had to see a very nice neurologist, and I got a new fancy orthopedic harness with handles to help me up.

I also got some stairs to use, but I’m afraid of them so I just jump up whenever I need to.   Now I get acupuncture

every two weeks.   She sticks a lot of pins in me, but it doesn’t hurt because I am so busy licking frozen baby food that the time flies by.

And I see a physical therapist.   They are both weird, but they give me frozen baby food to lick and this is tastier than ice cream.

Here I am walking on the underwater treadmill.  I walked for 7 minutes, until the frozen baby food was all gone.

swim

The dog swimming pool closed 🙁 , so I am no longer a mermaid (or merdog).    But I still get to go for walks, sniff, eat sausage rolls and squeak my collection of squeaky toys, so all is good.

Miss P

pen and pearls

Today Miss P would like to share her thoughts.

I am almost 12 now and looking back on everything I’ve had a pretty good life.   I moved into my present house in November, 2004 when I was adopted.   Before that I was homeless and lived on the streets of Woodland Park eating garbage and rabbits (both of which are very tasty!).

I love the water!   I have webbed feet and was born to swim although I had to learn how to do this when I encountered deep water.  In fact I went swimming today at the special doggy swimming pool.

I have been told that I have a pretty face, even by total strangers.  And many people ask about my beautiful curly coat.   I have naturally curly fur and I’m not part poodle.

I have a lot of hobbies:  destroying squeaky toys, chasing tennis balls,  eating (I’m not picky and it doesn’t have to be actually food), searching for dropped food (places with little children are the best for this), rolling in interesting things and going for long walks.

I also sort of like posing for pictures.

Snow removal

Winter in Colorado is a mixed bag, periods of warm weather then brief (usually) periods of snow and cold.    People think of skiing in the plentiful snow in Colorado, but the snow stays mostly in the higher elevations.   And the ski areas also make plenty of fake snow.  We just got a major storm, so people were freaking out and buying enough milk, bread and eggs for the apocalypse.  Now comes the clean up.

I measured 8 1/2 inches (or 21.25 centimeters for those who think in metric.)

This is my favorite snow removal tool, a leaf blower.   It creates an instant blizzard on soft fluffy snow.   This snow had crusted over, so it didn’t work very well.

That leaves the trusty ordinary snow shovel to do the job.   It is plastic, so one needs to buy a new one every few years.

Unlike the aluminium grain shovel, which is about 35 years old.  It’s great for heavy wet snow.

I also use paw-safe de-icer for the frozen bit.   Not pictured is the ice scraper, the brush on an extension pole for the satellite dish, various brooms, and the snow roof rake (because the hardware store sold me a box with just a handle in it).

However, these methods of snow removal pale in comparison with the technique of Miss P.

My Favorite holiday

When I was growing up we did not get candy on a regular basis, it was a special treat.   However, I went to All Saints School and All Saints Day is November 1st.  This meant that on Halloween me and my brothers would go out and collect massive amounts of candy, both store bought and homemade (except for the health nuts that gave out apples) and there was no school the next day.  This made this the perfect sort of holiday.

When I was a young adult not too many grown-ups celebrated this, but I would make cardboard costumes for us.   They had to cost less than $1 and we would go “trick or drinking”, and make friends give us drinks.

Now I don’t have too many kids in my neighborhood, but I always stock up on plenty of good candy to give out.   I even give candy to the parents who are out supervising the kids.   My sorority is putting together sacks of candy for everyone at an elementary school that we support.  And Miss P will wear her latest Halloween costume and supervise the giving out of the candy (although she would personally prefer to eat every last bit of it herself).

Because of Halloween some of the houses have been attacked by giant spiders.

3 in 24

So yesterday was a cartoonist’s day, the challenge was to draw 24 panels in 24 hours.   I didn’t actually read the directions, possibly there was some sort of guidelines.   I was busy shopping with my girlfriend too, so this is what I came up with.   I did four pages of 4 panel stuff, but I’m only posting three because I don’t really like the 4th page.   They are sketched and colored, but not inked.

This is the story of Miss P, she came from Teller County Regional Animal Shelter.   She was up in the mountains and lived on garbage and rabbits.   We got her and set about civilizing her.

I made a list of other things I saw during the day, but I didn’t really feel inspired enough to draw them, they were just things, and Miss P is my puppy princess.

Updates

I just wanted everyone to know that my dentist is still recovering from his accident.  I went by to see him on Sunday, and he is now able to use a walker (zimmer frame in British?)to get around.   He still has some stiffness and pain in the broken arm, but he can use it.  He expects to be in the rehab hospital for another month, then he plans to spend a month at home, then he is thinking about returning to work.   Way to go!

Miss P had a setback when she was in the kennel and she broke open a bit of her incision.   This is all healed up now, and I think she has started to like wearing little shirts.   She struts around whenever we go for a walk.pen15

My hand is finally healed as well, I forgot I was injured and as soon as the stitches were out I cracked it open using it.   Oops!

And the mountain today.

Dog Days

Dogs are creatures of narrow habits.  Even before my yard was fenced there were trails on the hill where my dog always walked.   A perfect day for my dog is the day where everything is done exactly the same, at the same time of day.   So when we rushed off to the veterinarian without even eating breakfast, she might have suspected that something was up.

She had surgery to remove a cyst on her left side, and while they were in there the vet found two small lipomas ( fatty tumors that dogs get) as well.   I picked her up, got her pills and instruction and we were off for home.  She immediately started to panic when they stuck the cone on her head, so I was driving along telling her what a good girl she was and trying not to have an accident.  The vet had said “It’s okay to take the cone off when you’re supervising her, but don’t go to sleep without making her wear the cone.” “and no stairs”.  No stairs is sort of easy, I live in a three level house, so we would just live on the first level like I did when I broke my ankle.  There’s television and food, what more do I need? (as it turns out, quite a lot).

I blocked off the window seat where she likes to sit and survey the neighborhood.  I put up the baby gate to block the stairs.  And I had various movable bits to block the other rooms.  I pulled up an extra mattress from the basement so I could sleep in the living room.   This did not fall into the dog’s narrow experience of habit.   She stood at the stairs waiting to go to bed and gave me ‘the look”, it’s bedtime and we can’t sleep here!  I slapped the cone on her, then she went into total freak out.   She was hyperventilating and pacing back and forth bumping into everything.  I eventually gave in (I know I’m a soft touch), disobeyed the vets orders and took the cone off.   She got into bed with me (well on mattress anyway) and fell asleep.  I did tell her I would kill her if she touched the stitches, but I wasn’t sure if she believed me.  It was very unfair of the vet to give her pills and not give me any, because at this point I really needed something!

She is healing up and starting to feel better, and she is even getting used to the idea that we can live on the first level.  Only ten more days of this and then it will back to the old way, if she can deal with that change.

May Flowers

iris3iris

April showers are alleged to bring May flowers, but here in the high altitude of Colorado it works a little differently.   April may have rain or it may have snow or there may be nothing.   This May had a blizzard and plenty of hailstorms, so the flowers are only starting to come out now,  in the middle of June.   Miss P is posing at the high altitude iris testing grounds over by the library.

Fry Bread Dog

fb1

Miss P and I were out and about today when we decided to go to the pow-wow.   The first thing they said to me at the entrance was “Is that a service dog?”  I looked down at her.  She’s a labramutt wearing an ordinary collar and a gentle leader because she pulls.  No sign of the special harness of a service dog.  “No” I said, “She’s a fry bread dog and she is here to get some fry bread”.   They looked her over for a moment and then said, “Well, in that case she can come in” .

So, we ordered a Navajo Taco to share, which is fry bread topped with pinto beans, meat, lettuce, cheese and salsa.  And it was delicious.   What is fry bread you might ask.   Depending on the treaty, the United States Government is obligated to give Native American tribal members certain things, like cloth and bacon, and very often flour.   Again, depending on the treaty, the government does this to this day.  Fry bread has become traditional at pow-wows, thanks to this policy.   It’s a simple dough, made with flour, water, baking powder and salt, then fried.  Sometimes it’s served with honey or icing sugar on top as a sweet.

There were wolves from the wolf sanctuary there, and Miss P does not like wolves so we left before the dancing started.   Also as usual the drum was late, so it was going to start on Indian time.
