{"id":2521,"date":"2017-08-20T12:25:00","date_gmt":"2017-08-20T21:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/?p=2521"},"modified":"2017-08-20T12:39:32","modified_gmt":"2017-08-20T22:09:32","slug":"local-icons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/?p=2521","title":{"rendered":"Local Icons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every place brags about the famous persons who lived at or were born in the locale. \u00a0 And who wouldn&#8217;t want to be immortalized on art that covers up a street corner utility box? \u00a0Located right next to the juror&#8217;s parking lot in downtown, we have this exemplar of civic pride which celebrates these local icons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2522\" src=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This writer (1830-1885) was born and lived in the east for most of her life. \u00a0Coincidentally enough, she was one of the many tourists who came out to see the Falls of the previous post. \u00a0And she met and married her second husband here. \u00a0 She did have a house in town and part of it is preserved in the local history museum (of course it was torn down). \u00a0 She wrote a scholarly book about the failure of the US Government to live up to the various treaties signed with native tribes. \u00a0 But she was more famous for a romance novel about the same subject. \u00a0 She was buried at the top of the Falls, but was later moved to a cemetery.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2523\" src=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons1.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Tesla_Colorado.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2526\" src=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Tesla_Colorado-238x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Tesla_Colorado-238x300.jpg 238w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Tesla_Colorado.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 238px) 100vw, 238px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This well-known inventor (1856-1943) only lived here for a brief time in 1899 (the building is no longer standing). \u00a0He came to do electrical experiments at high altitude (no word as to whether he visited the falls). \u00a0After blowing up the electrical grid of the city, he returned to the east.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2524\" src=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons2-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This silent film actor (1883-1930) shown here as the character he portrayed in &#8220;London After Midnight&#8221; was actually born here. \u00a0 His grandfather started the school for the deaf, \u00a0and the family lived nearby (and the house still exists). \u00a0 Famous as &#8220;the man of a thousand faces&#8221; \u00a0he only made one talking picture. \u00a0The civic auditorium bears his name.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2525\" src=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons3-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons3-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons3-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/flytippings.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/icons3.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This woman (1918-2005), shown here in a demure pose ran a nightclub\/bar about 2 blocks north of this spot starting in the 1950&#8217;s. \u00a0She featured well known jazz musicians and &#8220;everybody&#8221;
